Are you considering micro locs?
Well, it’s important to know all about micro locking before going into it.
Here, we’d be discussing;
1. What micro locs are.
2. Pros and cons of micro locs.
3. Maintenance of micro locs.
Let’s get into it!
So,
WHAT ARE MICRO LOCS (to begin with)?
Micro locs, (as the name implies) are really tiny or micro loc installations. The number of micro locs on each head could range between two hundred and a thousand.
Micro locs are different from regular dreadlocks in that micro locs are much tinier than dreadlocks and have a wider range of styles for installation. They are installed either by twisting, braiding or interlocking.
However, there are two methods commonly used during micro locs retwist. First is retwist (by palm rolling) and second is interlocking.
(It is important to note that “microtwist” is a form of micro locks installation. If kept long term, it becomes micro locks, but can be kept temporarily. I usually get inquiries from people who want microtwists for short term.
Yes, you can get them for short term, but the losing process is time consuming and could cause breakage.)

MICRO LOCKS PROS AND CONS

3. They weigh lighter than the weight of larger locks.
4. It adds more volume to the hair.
Cons
1. Installation of micro locs is time consuming.
2. It has a higher cost than regular styles.
3. It can be fragile If installed too small.
4. Micro locs aren’t exactly suitable on relaxed hair, due to its brittle nature.
MAINTENANCE
Of course, micro locs need to be maintained and taken care of properly. It is advisable to relock or retwist your micro locs every four to eight weeks in order to keep them neat. In the early stage of locking, it should be washed at least before the next retwist (don’t wash it often, or else your twists could loose). When washing, ensure you use good shampoo and conditioner, suitable for your hair type.
Regularly keep your micro locs hydrated, either by spritzing with water or leave in conditioning. This keeps the locs moist and allows it to breathe properly, keeping them healthy and in good shape. Also apply oil to the scalp regularly, so it doesn’t stay dry and give way to dandruff or flakes.
After washing, please DO NOT use your towel to wipe off excess water. Avoid using anything wooly on your locs like wool ribbons or scrunchies, as they could cause lint build-up (lint are tiny hair-like pieces of material that stick to surfaces), which is difficult to get rid of when entangled in locs. Always cover your locs securely with a headscarf to sleep, in order to avoid lint. It is advisable to use silky materials, like silk bonnets when sleeping at night.
These are the basic things you should know before embarking on your micro locs journey. Any questions? If no and you’re ready, kindly contact Hannah for your microlocs installation!
